The Wendigo Hunt is an encounter in Secrets of the Frontier's Watcher Beyond the Walls module.

Triggering

The encounter can only trigger after the player first activates Courser Protocol while hostile to the Dustkeeper Contingency. It will then automatically trigger when its conditions are met.

Ambush

When the player next visits the fringe of the Sector, they may be ambushed by Wendigo's Ether Wolves, a very large elite force of Dustkeeper hunter-killers headed by Wintry-Annex-Wendigo. The fleet will attempt to intercept the player near a star system, within a system, or within hyperspace.

The Ether Wolves have universally pristine ships, an average of 2 s-mods applied to each ship and have greatly increased officer quality to Dustkeeper standard, and are likely to be the most deadly Dustkeeper fleet the player will encounter.

Conversation

The feed resolves to a snow-white crest like fur and teeth. "Hello, darling," comes an eerily soothing voice. "Was it you, calling for help?"

Wintry-Annex-Wendigo will hail the player upon intercept and taunt them. The player has the option to bargain with Wendigo only if they are not under the Dustkeeper Hatred condition caused by committing an atrocity.

Offers that the player can make include:

Successfully bargaining with Wendigo will result in them leaving the player be, and the player's reputation with the Dustkeepers will be set to non-hostile levels.

A Favor for Wendigo

Offering to see through a favor results in Wendigo tasking the player with destroying a Remnant Nexus within 1 cycle. The nexus must be fully-operational, those found in high-danger Remnant systems (red beacon) with all of its modules. Wendigo will indicate the location of the nearest such Nexus to the player and the mission will set it as its target, but any fully-functional nexus can be destroyed to fulfil the favor. The player's reputation will only be restored upon destroying the mission.

Failing to complete the mission results in Wendigo intercepting the player once again, with no opportunity to bargain.

Non-Hostility

If the player manages to become non-hostile with the Dustkeepers after the initial use of Courser Protocol, but before being intercepted by Wendigo, the conversation will begin identically but rapidly take a less hostile tone as Wendigo notes the player's been flagged as all-clear. Wendigo's fleet will stop blocking the player's disengage and then leave.
